Digital Reference Comparison

Posted 11-01-2009 at 10:18 PM by Stacey
I like the Text-a-Librarian service, but I'd be worried about trying to answer anything more than a quick ready reference question. You also aren't guaranteed to understand a "normal" texter's question, even with the translate feature.

I really like the email (IPL) reference the best. Both the patron and the librarian have time to think through things and try to get spelling and grammar correct. You can also take your time finding resources, making sure they're accurate and dependable and crafting your response. Chat reference was just too hectic for me and texting seems over-simplified.

Don't get me wrong, the translate feature is totally cool and necessary; it just can't be expected to catch everything. If you get a message where they use 2 instead of to or U instead of you sort of thing, it can make it easier to parse. But if you get someone talking in l33t, will it catch it all? 1 Ð0n'7 |{n0w (I don't know).
