Finally diving into my IPL questions. ;o (Cont'd from 10/18)

The one thing I have noticed as I get through some of these questions is that I'm a little bit out of practice. I think I'm going to go back and do the training again...not because I don't feel my answers are incorrect, but I'm finding that I'm running into situations that I don't ever remember getting into?

For example, I had a great question I picked up regarding the "History of Cell Phones from 1990's-present". I thought that this would be an easy search and rescue mission, but I found out that it wasn't as easy as I thought. What I realized is that if a person has the sense to use the IPL to acquire their information, they probably have the know-how to do a simple search on Google, or a database they have access to.

Ok, so I didn't find anything right away, but when I did, it was the Golden Parachute of information!

The article that I found was specifically geared towards the past 15 years of mobile technology and its future!

Here's the problem: The full text of the article was not available on any database that I was searching?? I really had no idea what to do, so I sent a POST-A-NOTE and an IPL member got back to me about adding a disclaimer in my response that stated it wasn't full text.

Ok, so I did that..but what if I DO find a full-text article but am not sure if the patron has access to the same database or not???

The issue of full text is important in digital reference and we will be discussing this later in the quarter. One possibility is to figure out which public library is near the patron (based on the information on the request form) and telling the patron that he/she may obtain that from the public library - if not through the database, possibly through ILL?
