I was first on deck last night, and I don't mind admitting that I was nervous! But I was fully prepared with my powerpoint, my notes...and my cough drops, a bottle of water and some tissues because of this darn cold. Maybe a bit overprepared?

But it went just fine, no technical glitches and no coughing into the mike. Yay me!

It's odd that I was so twitchy - I've run meetings in RL, teach small classes, etc. without many butterflies. Just the change of venue, and...

Ooops, didn't blog last week! Better get a quickie in before I forget....

Things a bit frantic at the moment - had a big project due in my other class (and another coming up soon), needed to go out of town last weekend, and now I've got to present in class tonight. Whatever possessed me to volunteer to do this EARLY???

Oh, well. At least it'll be done. I've got a short slideshow worked out, and my notes should keep me on track for five minutes....provided...

I have to admit that seeing the vast variety of questions coming in to the IPL has been a great experience! Since my own library is so specialized, most of the questions I get asked there fall into a small set of subjects. What I'm dealing with in the IPL is closer to what a reference person in either a public library or one of the larger undergraduate academic library would deal with. VERY

Our discussion last night in class about reflecting a 'real librarian' image in Second Life (and other virtual realities) got me thinking about what I've learned in RL.

In Second Life, your choice of avatar types, how they're dressed, even eyeglasses versus none can influence your 'believability'. The standards might be different, based on the SL environment you're in.

Up to a point, the same is true in RL. I've worked in academic libraries my whole professional life....

Second RA shift has come and gone and it looks like I've gotten the hang of at least the standard procedures. I'm getting the impression that every shift is going to have at least a couple of truly odd requests that will require the advice or intervention of the Senior RAs.

I'm not sure which requests make me roll my eyes more....the ones where I can barely figure out what they're asking (due to spelling issues or language barrier), or the ones where I can tell they've done 'cut...
