The Week of Copyright

Posted 11-21-2009 at 08:13 PM by djosborn
I can't believe how much discussion there was about copyright this week. Right after I did the reading and posted on Monday, it seems that everything copyright was in the news. I listen to the Podcast called "Buzz Out Loud" on cnet.com, and they focused heavily on google and copyright in the news. It just doesn't make sense to me that so much time and energy is wasted trying to get money out of certain material. I would be glad to have google providing access to my books essentially for free....

Tuesday: The Day of Silly Questions

Posted 11-11-2009 at 07:24 PM by djosborn
During my RA shift this week, I was once again met wit a series of silly questions by various patrons. And just like last week, there were some which were too strange to give out to the community. However there were some questions that although silly in nature (they were all from the same user) were also rather though provoking too. 1) Compare and contrast these three technologies for offering reference services.

After having tested the various methods of digital reference services, I would say that the biggest difference between them has to do with the style of service and length of response. While using e-mail you as a librarian are set to a particular format in which to respond, but are free to respond at length. Similarly, the e-mail reference librarian is under a great deal of assumption as they may...

Transcripts

Posted 10-22-2009 at 06:35 PM by djosborn
This weeks assignment I found very interesting as it gave me a new perspective on the reference interview. Normally we are only working with what we accomplish on our own, but in this case we can see truly diverse examples of other librarians in the field. The first example in particular reminded me of the many technical service calls I used to have to make back when I owned a PC. Answers would be released without any concern for the root cause of the problem, a scenario which is clearly...
