New Instructors Information

From Wiki3

To help you integrate hands-on learning experiences for your students with the Internet Public Library into your syllabus and courses, you are welcome to use the following powerpoint lectures, sample assignments, sample syllabi, activities, videos, and other resources (these are examples of what can be found in the Instructors area of the IPL Learning Community):

  • Syllabus for IPL Reference (4 questions) (Word syllabus .doc) Example syllabus assignment for hands-on student work in IPL Reference question-answering used at Florida State University in Spring 2008. Uses 1 practice question and 4 'real user' questions as the requirement (number of questions here can be considered somewhat low, but is due to other assignments in the syllabus; depending on your class needs, you might assign more questions) See also the IPL Student Training Manual - summary of the student training process.
  • Course Readings. A bibliography of selected published articles about the Internet Public Library is included on the general IPL Learning Community Wiki. There is also an additional extensive collection of press clippings on the IPL's main site. These supplemental readings can be used to initiate discussions about the history of online reference services, the history of IPL, and a variety of issues in virtual reference.
  • IPL Reference using QRC (16 Powerpoint lecture slides). Screenshots show how question-answering works using IPL's QRC system, and also provides a tour of the Reference area on IPL's Learning Community site, including the Reference wiki. This is useful to show early on as an introduction to the mechanics of how the QRC system will work, and how students can interact with staff and each other for help in the Learning Community.
  • Tour of the Internet Public Library (11 Powerpoint lecture slides). Screenshots show the different areas of the IPL where students can find resources for answering questions, such as the reference collections, exhibits, special collections, pathfinders and FAQs. Can be done early to help orient students to finding resources in the IPL, and also can be done in conjunction with a fun "scavenger hunt" exercise in IPL.
  • Tips on Answering Questions (12 Powerpoint lecture slides). Help for students who are answering IPL questions on what is a good answer, and tips for techniques to use when they are out of ideas for finding answers. This is particularly useful as students begin to actually answer real questions from IPL users, and are beginning to realize the complexity of reference work; it includes example IPL questions that can be discussed, techniques for judging good answers, and help for when students are "stumped" on an answer.
  • Streaming Version We also provide this Java-based streaming powerpoint version that includes some of the same information as "Tips on Answering Questions," above, but includes animation and voiceover. Topics include: history of the IPL; who answers the questions; what the webform looks like; six required elements of an answer; mechanics hints (copying, pasting); what is a good answer; hints for what to do if you are stumped.
  • Teachers' Questions (7 Powerpoint lecture slides). A look at types of questions submitted to the IPL by teachers, demonstrating an example of the use of IPL by a particular user group. Useful for engaging students in discussions about different types of user groups, the various types of reference questions that they might ask, and differing information needs.
  • IPL Collection development using Hypatia (28 Powerpoint lecture slides). Screenshots show how collection development works using IPL's Hypatia system, and also a tour of the Collections area on IPL's Learning Community site, including the Collections wiki. This would be useful as an early orientation in a class which involves evaluating user site suggestions, evaluating and adding resources to the Ready Reference collections, and other collection-based projects in the Internet Public Library. Shows how the Hypatia collections system works, assigning metadata, and also tours the Collections areas on the IPL Learning Community where students can interact with each other and with IPL staff for help. See also the IPL Collections Student Training Manual for more on these types of assignments.
  • Videos. A variety of clickable videos are interspersed in the IPL's historical timeline, including interviews with several students who were in the very first class which created the IPL in 1995. You can also find videos with Dr. Joseph Janes, the IPL's founding director, linked in the Instructor's area of the IPL Learning Community forums. There is also a video tour of the IPL and a video of the Science Fair Project Guide.
